Species - Panfish - Black Crappie

Black Crappie

Scientific Name:

Pomoxis nigromaculatus

Common Names:

black crappie, speckled perch, specks, papermouth

Description:

Black crappies are green to slightly yellow in color with multiple dark spots. It has large dorsal and anal fins. It has a large mouth and small heads with arched backs.

Location:

Common to Great Lakes down to Alabama into Florida and northward along the Atlantic Coast to Virginia. They have also been introduced into many other states such as California.

They are commonly found away from cover, often in slightly deeper water. They tend to stay suspended still in slightly moving to still waters.

Size:

Usually about 1 to 2 lbs but may reach 4 lbs or more.

Spawning:

February to April in the South when water temperatures reach low to mid 60's.

Prey:

Most commonly consumes aquatic insects, crustaceans, and small fish.

Fishing notes:

Natural baits such as worms, shrimp, and insects work well. Lures such as small spinners, jigs, and small crankbaits also work well.
