Description: |
The topside is olive green with an off white underside. It has two
barbels near the nostrils. The bowfin has an air bladder which works
like a lung. They can be seen near the surface getting mouthfuls of air. |

Location: |
Freshwater.
Found from Maryland to Florida and through the Mississippi valley up
to Michigan and Wisconsin eastward to New York. Found in swamps and
warm, poorly oxygenated waters. |

Size: |
Known to reach sizes of 20 lbs or more. |
|
Spawning: |
Spawns mainly in the spring and at night. Nests are made near vegetation. |
|
Prey: |
They feed mostly on fish and crayfish. |
|
Fishing notes: |
Can be caught on minnows, worms, crayfish, and cut bait. Ocassionaly
will strike on lures.
Not a favored food fish. Best if smoked, fried in egg and bread crumb
patties, or stewed. |
