Description: |
green to brown in color with black or slightly red spots on each
scale. There are two subspecies; L. p. punctatus and L. P. miniatus |

Location: |
L. p. punctatus are found from Florida up to North Carolina.
L. p. miniatus are found in the Mississippi along to the Gulf Coast
into Florida.
Spotted sunfish have also been introduced into the eastern half of Texas. |

Size: |
It is one of the smaller species of panfish. Most are less then 12 oz
and less than 6 inches. |

Spawning: |
They spawn May through November. They commonly create nests in
isolated areas. |
|
Prey: |
They will feed on a large range of items form plant matter to small
fish. Aquatic insects and invertebrates make up a large portion of
their diet. |

Fishing notes: |
Natural baits like worms, crickets and minnows work good. Lures such
as small spinners and flies work well too. Due to their small sizes,
be sure to use light tackle or a canepole with small hooks. |
