Species - Panfish - White Crappie

White Crappie

Scientific Name:

Pomoxis annularis

Common Names:

white crappie

Description:

Their backs are a silvery green to dark green with light to almost white undersides. They have several vertical bands on their sides.

Location:

Found from North Dakota to Maine in the north, down the eastern seaboard to Florida, along the Gulf Coast into Texas. Also introduced into Arizona, California, Colorado, Montanna, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Utah

Size:

Up to 4 lbs or more.

Spawning:

Commonly when water temps reach 65 to 70 degrees. Northern locations may spawn in lower temps.

Prey:

Most commonly consumes aquatic insects, crustaceans, and small fish.

Fishing notes:

Natural baits such as minnows and worms work best. Lures such as small spinners, jigs, and small crankbaits also work well.
